Summer Short-Term Trainee Program
in Biomedical Informatics for Minority Students
Are you a student who is interested in learning about how technology can improve science and medicine? If so, you may want to explore the field of Biomedical Informatics this summer. From analyzing the human genome to tracking medical information in Electronic Health Records, from creating new ways of educating medical students to detecting outbreaks of diseases, the field of Biomedical Informatics is transforming health care and scientific discovery.
The Department of Biomedical Informatics (www.dbmi.pitt.edu) at the University of Pittsburgh is pleased to offer short-term training opportunities during the summer of 2008 to appropriately qualified undergraduate, graduate, or medical students from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. These groups include: Black or African American, Native American, Alaskan Indian, Hispanic, Hawaiian Native, or Pacific Islander. Students may be enrolled at ANY institution in the Pittsburgh area (e.g., Pitt, CMU, Chatham, etc). Possible academic backgrounds that we will consider include (but are not limited to): the health sciences, computer science, linguistics, human-computer interaction, engineering, or psychology. The goals of this training opportunity are to permit individuals who have a nascent interest in informatics to gain research experience and to encourage minorities to consider informatics as a career field.
We envision that a student will work closely with a single faculty member on a project that can be completed during the summer. The nature of this project would depend on the skill set and interest of the student. Also, the student would have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with other faculty members to learn about their research areas. The length of the training period is 12 weeks. A stipend of $5,193 is available.
