Selena Chan is an Exercise Science major at the University of Pittsburgh with research experience in Endocrinology on diabetes, obesity, and the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome, performed through the Obesity and Nutrition Research Center (ONRC) and also the Center for Disease Control (CDC)'s prevention research center, the Center for Healthy Aging (CHA). Selena's experienced firsthand the role of lifestyle modifications in holistically healing chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease) and hopes to draw from these experiences in her future career. Recently, she won the award for the Department of Health and Physical Activity's "Outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year 2007-2008".
Her work for PittAMSA entails serving as a liaison with Pitt medical school's Asian Pacific AMSA chapter, APAMSA - a position for which she's dedicated hours of time and enthusiastic effort to promote Hepatisis B screenings and raise community awareness. In her spare time, she has contributed to newspaper articles in the column "Healthier Tomorrows" in the Mckeesport Daily News and was also given the opportunity to revise a Textbook chapter entitled "Frailty" to gain authorship (her name can be found in the 3rd edition of the American College of Sports Medicine's textbook entiled "Exercise Management for Persons with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities"). One of Selena's foremost goals for the future is to unify medical science with the holistic approach in a healthcare career.
